How to Successfully Treat a Throat Ulcer

What Causes a Pressure Ulcer?

A pressure ulcer is basically a section of skin that has begun to break down because of constant pressure to the area. This occurs when a person is constantly in one position for too long. The prolonged pressure put on the skin restricts the blood flow to the region, robbing the skin of the nutrients it needs to maintain health. Without those nutrients, it begins to die.

Usually, the first sign of an ulcer to appear is redness on the skin. However, it can very quickly get worse. The skin begins to break down and crack, with the result being an open sore. Without treatment, it progresses on to an open crate in the skin. At this stage, the ulcer is very susceptible to infection and can lead to serious health issues.

There are a number of factors that can lead to the development of a pressure ulcer. One factor is the lack of ability to move parts of your body. A good example of this would be someone who is in a comatose state. This individual should be moved and turned regularly to prevent the development of an ulcer.

Lack of proper nutrition plays a role in the development of an ulcer. Our bodies need nutrients every day. When we are deprived of them, the body functions less efficiently and the result can be that a pressure ulcer can develop in shorter periods of time.

Confined to a bed or wheelchair as a result of illness is another cause of ulcers. Even though the individual is conscious, he or she will still need assistance in repositioning themselves from time to time, to make sure the blood flow to all parts of the body is adequate. Otherwise, an ulcer is sure to develop.

Incontinence can also create the perfect situation for a pressure ulcer to develop. Moisture that remains in contact with the skin for an extended period of time will cause skin irritation. This condition will weaken the skin and make it more susceptible to the development of an ulcer.

Should a pressure ulcer develop, it is imperative to consult a doctor immediately. The doctor can proscribe both oral and topical medication that will help the body recover its ability to relieve the condition. The physician can also recommend proper methods of moving the person at regular time intervals to help ease the conditions that helped the pressure to develop.
