Developing an Effective Ulcer Diet

Often, an ulcer can be treated with a few simple changes in the way you eat. Here are a few tips to help you develop an ulcer diet that will help you regain your good health.

One of the most important things to know is what foods you should be consuming. The good news is that acceptable foods can be found in every major food group. As an example, you can still enjoy breads, but it is important to make choices that are whole grain and enriched. Bagels, English muffins, and pita bread are all acceptable for an ulcer diet.

Vegetables are also a staple of the diet. Whether they are fresh, frozen, or canned, make sure to avoid a lot of spice. Steamed vegetables may be particularly desirable with your ulcer diet, as they maintain a lot of the nutrients of raw vegetables.

You will be allowed plenty of fruit on your diet. However, you should avoid citrus fruits, such as lemons, grapefruit or oranges. These acidic fruits will irritate your ulcer, making it take longer to heal. The same is true with fruit juices. Avoid anything with a lot of acid and rely more on juices made from apples or grapes.

When it comes to meats, you can have just about anything on your diet, as long as it is not highly seasoned with spices. Beef, pork and chicken are perfect for consumption. With chicken, be sure to remove the skin. Stay away from such meats as corned beef, luncheon meats, or sausages.

Low fat and non-fat are the order of the day when it comes to dairy products. Use skim milk, and cheese that contains less than five grams of fat per ounce. Yogurt and low fat cottage cheese are also great choices for your diet.

For liquids, you may find that limiting or omitting carbonated drinks from your ulcer diet will lessen the pain. Eliminating coffee and tea are also important. Go for water, milk, and fruit and vegetable juices that do not have a lot of additives or flavor enhancers.

Your doctor can ascertain which foods would be most effective with your ulcer diet. Your meals should be balanced and healthy. For more information on compiling an effective ulcer diet, go online or ask your doctor to refer you to a nutritionist.
