Management Of Venous Leg Ulcer

Venous leg ulcer may feel no pain to others, but there are sufferers who feel so much pain from it. For the unlucky few, a swelling and painful venous leg ulcer should be treated with vein grafting. But for those whose leg ulcer is still in the early stage, there are ways to manage the pain and to prevent the ulceration from getting worse.

Venous ulcer is not the spider-like or curly veins that we often see protruding from the skin of a pregnant or elderly woman; those curly veins are actually called varicose veins. Venous leg ulcer looks like an inflamed patch of skin, with inflammation starting from the inside. Those who are suffering from it usually have a patch of ulcerated skin near the ankle.

Varicose veins, however, contribute to the development of venous leg ulcer. Poorly functioning veins fail to transmit blood to the capillaries that give nutrients and oxygen to muscle tissues, thus, the death of the tissue cells and eventually the start of ulceration.

Management of venous leg ulcer, therefore, is similar to management of varicose veins. The principle behind this is simple: if the veins are healthy, there will be no ulceration of the leg caused by ruptured or poorly circulating veins.
